Fourth Annual Tribute to Salsa Choreographers

Eileen Torres presents the Fourth Annual Tribute to Salsa Choreographers Awards and Dance Show at Zanzibar on the Waterfront, Thursday, November 20, 2008 in Washington, DC. Mark you calendars for a great dance show including salsa, rueda, tango, ballroom (mambo, cha-cha, rumba) and more. The show will be presented in two parts beginning at 9:30 pm. Dance Team partial list: Salsa Fuego, Salsa Vive, Mambo Mamis, Latin Motion, Son Mulato, Ballroom Dance Company, Dance in Time, Azucar Moreno, Lynn La Martina and more. DJs, Bruno “El Unico” & Carlos “El Cacique” will play music for dancing before, in between and after the two-part dance show. 2008 Awardees- Kim Yates, Karen Aguilar and Keith Givens. In addition there will be a sale of Dance Shoes, Clothing Jewelry and Accessories. Doors open at 5:00 pm. Margaritas are $2.00 until 7 pm. Where: Bethesda Hyatt Regency Hotel, at One Bethesda Metro Center, Bethesda, Md. 301-657-8176. 20814. It is above the metro stop, on the red line, at the Bethesda stop. If you're driving, the underground parking is well lite and you can walk out of your car directly into the Crystal Ballroom where the New Year's Eve Party will be held. The hotel does not operate the parking lot and you'll have to ask the hotel for the rates for parking.

Sunday, November 2nd-- Jeri's New six week sessions of progressive salsa classes at the Cherrydale Firehouse---directions above. Beginner classes will meet from 3 til 4:30pm where you learn your basic steps & turns, cross bod leads and basic lead and follow technique. Intermediate classes will meet from 4:30 to 6pm where we work on double hand changes leading and following. Cost for all six weeks is only $80/pp or $150/couple. Classes will meet Nov. 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd (skip the 30th due to Thanksgiving Day Holiday), December 7th and 14th with our 10th Annual Holiday Party at the Cherrydale Firehouse! The Y2salsa student group will consist of 16 sessions every Saturday for 3 hours for 4 months from 2pm-5pm with 15 minute breaks in between. Students that participate will learn to improve their dance technique in Salsa to have the option to perform a mambo on2 salsa choreography at a special event or at local venues.

In 1996, La India worked with Tito Puente in the production of "Jazzin", the English version of some swing classics with a Latin twist for RMM Records. That year she contributed the song "Banderas" to the album "Voces Unidas" (United Voices), a multi-artist tribute to the 1996 Summer Olympics. She also released "India:Mega Mix" that same year before divorcing Vega. La India sang a duet, "La Voz de la Experiencia" (The Voice of Experience), with Celia Cruz, "The Queen of Salsa". It was then that Cruz named La India "The Princess of Salsa".
In 1997, La India recorded "Sobre el Fuego" (Over the Fire) with Puerto Rican salsa singer Kevin Ceballo as back-up, and was nominated for the "Best Latin Tropical Performance" Grammy Award and in 1998 she won an ACE Award.
On May 31, 1998 La India had two sold out concerts at the Luis A. Ferre Center of Beautiful Arts in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She returned to the United States and Cable Channel UPN aired one of her shows. La India also held concerts in New York's Madison Square Garden and in El Festival de la Calle Ocho in Miami, Florida.
On February 5, 2000, a full page ad was placed in Billboard Magazine congratulating her on her second Grammy Award nomination and on March 2000, she was featured on Vibe Magazine.
In 2003, La India released "Latin Songbird: Mi Alma Y Corazón". The album's lead single, the salsa romantic tune "Sedúceme", became a hit in the Latin Charts, topping the U.S. Billboard Hot Latin Tracks for several weeks. This was La India's first number 1 song. That song brought her a new fanbase, as well, as many awards and nominations, including two Latin Grammy nominations for Best Salsa Album and Best Tropical Song in 2003, and her third Grammy Award nomination for Best Salsa Album in 2004.
In 2005, La India participated in the musical presentation 'Selena Vive', a tribute to the late Tejano sensation 'Selena Quintanilla - Perez'.
In 2006, she released the album "Soy Diferente" and which contained two songs which became "hits", they were "Soy Diferente" and "Solamente Una Noche". The 2007 Annual Latin Billboard Awards honored India with (2) Awards, Best Tropical Album of The Year Female for "Soy Diferente" and Latin Dance Club Play track of the Year for "Just For One Night/Solamente Una Noche".

The first hour consists of salsa rhythm and timing section where we we show you how to find the down beat or the 1 in a song. We will have a special guest live percussionist playing conga and clave sticks

FootWork

The second hour consists of learning "mambo shines" (which is fancy, sexy, open solo footwork), and how to execute shines with a unique smoothness all your own.

Partnerwork

The third hour focuses on partner work, consisting of basic turn patterns, leading and following techniques, and much more. A partner is not necessary to attend any of our classes, as we have a rotation policy.

Saturday, Sept. 13th at the Smithsonian - Living in Many Worlds: Hispanic Heritage Month Family Day Celebration from 1 to 5pm at the Kogod Courtyard/Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture 8th St. and G St. NW, WDC. Admission is free. The hole family is invitied to kick off the Smithsonian's Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with craft and art making activities, bomba y plena music and dance performances, children's storytelling, family oriented bilingual tours! and other interactive activities. This is the first event in the Smithsonian Heritage Month series "Living in Many Worlds," which explores the many influences of time and place on heritage and identity. This program is also part of the Puerto Rico at the Smithsonian program series and is sponsored by the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies, the Smithsonian Heritage Months Steering Committee, and the Smithsonian Latino Center. On Thursday, September 11, 2008 Zanzibar adds a new feature. In addition to Salsa Nights on the upper level Samba Brazil will be featured on the lower level. PATRONS CAN MOVE BETWEEN BOTH FLOORS. Dance students can take advantage of an additional class featuring samba lessons at 8:30 pm on the lower level.

Brazilian DJs will spin after class at 9:30. A samba show will be featured at 11:30 that night. Cover remains $5.00 before 10 pm and $10 after 10 pm.

Couples may also register for $150 for a six week session or $275 for both six week sessions . Beginner classes meet from 3 til 4:30pm. Intermediate classes meet from 4:30 to 6pm. Classes will meet Sept. 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, Oct. 12th, 19th with special workshops on Oct. 26th. It will be held Sunday, August 24 from 6:00 PM.- 12:00 AM. The following DJ's, bands and musicians will participate: DJ Miguel 'El Sonero', DJ Bruno, DJ Carlos 'El Cacique', DJ Ali 'El Oso Negro' and DJ Willie Ramos 'Hercules'. Orquesta La Romana, Orquesta Sin Miedo and Orquesta La Sensual, and Alexis Fleites performing a guitar solo.

Thursday, August 21, 2008 is Salsa DJ Appreciation Night at Zanzibar. All Salsa DJs will be admitted free and receive an award for their service to the Salsa community. There will also be a DJ panel as part of Salsa Sabios Night from 7-8 pm. If you are a local salsa DJ please send your name, number of years of experience and where you play or have played. Your name will be placed on the guest list for Thur. Aug. 21.If you know of any salsa DJs please make them aware of this Appreciation Night and ask them to contact me by Friday, Aug 8. I will be ordering awards on Aug 11. I want to include everyone that entertains our dancing community.
